Our towbar extension for your bike carrier (35 cm, bolt-on) solves a familiar Defender problem: on a Land Rover Defender and many other 4×4 off-roaders the spare wheel gets in the way of a bike carrier.

35 cm — 10 cm more than the competition

With this towbar extension for your bike carrier, the tow ball sits 35 cm further back. That's 10 cm more than most competitors, who only offer 25 cm — and that makes a big difference, especially on the New Land Rover Defender (L663) and the Classic Defender. As a result, every standard bike carrier fits without any problem. Load capacity up to 75 kg.

Towbar extension with sturdy bolt-on mounting

The extension is secured firmly with the supplied bolt; once fitted it sits rock-solid. This extension is also handy on an ordinary car, camper or van: you can often open the tailgate or door without first removing the bikes or carrier. Universal: fits any tow bar with an ISO 50 mm ball, such as on the Ineos Grenadier. Not intended for towing trailers.

  • Ideal for the New Defender (L663) and Classic Defender
  • Also suitable for campervans, vans and pick-ups
  • Also suitable for the Ineos Grenadier
  • 35 cm long — 10 cm more than the competition

Is a towbar extension legal on public roads?

Yes, as long as you use it for a bike carrier. A bike carrier on the towbar legally counts as cargo and not as a part of your car, which is why no separate type approval is required. In Germany this follows from section 22 StVO: a carrier that you fit and take off again is cargo, so you need no ABE for it and nothing has to be entered in your vehicle documents. The same applies to this extension, because it only moves the carrier further back.

Never tow a trailer with the extension

Use the extension only for a bike carrier or a comparable load carrier, and never to tow a trailer or caravan. Your towbar is approved for a fixed geometry, and an extension increases the leverage, which voids that approval. In Germany you thereby lose your vehicle's operating permit under section 19(2) StVZO, and your insurance cover along with it.

What to watch out for yourself

  • Rated up to 75 kg, including the weight of the bike carrier itself. We calculated this figure in SolidWorks and deliberately applied generous safety margins.
  • Stay below the maximum noseweight of your own car; you will find it in your vehicle documents.
  • If the carrier covers your number plate, a repeater plate belongs on the carrier.
  • If the carrier covers your rear lights, a lighting board on the carrier is mandatory.
  • Allow for the greater overhang when parking and reversing, and do not drive faster than 130 km/h.
